I watched the family film today. It's been a little over three months since Dad died. I thought I would go to pieces hearing his voice. I found it comforting actually. I get a strong sense of heritage from it.
The Family Film is a movie Dad had made in the eighties as a study on heritage and social development. There's a lot of heavy psychobabble but there a lot of great family photos, old stories, and you get to hear my mom sing, well sing then laugh a lot. There is a picture of Dad's hand and mine doing the Spark of Life thing for that Micheal Angelo picture about the creation of Adam. I choked up a bit when Dad quoted Dylan Thomas in relation to his own dying father. I found the poem when Dad was in the hospital.
I gotta repost the sign he left on his office door when he retired.
"Well I guess this is my stop. I'll get off here, but I wanted to leave you with a few of the thoughts that have guided me over the years, especially those which might pertain to the future of our work. Always remember that our patients have few advocates and seldom speak up for them selves. We must always keep their needs and their priorities before our own, lest they get trampled underfoot. Understanding is hard. the less you know of someone the more likely you are to think they act deliberately. The better you know them the more you realize that they are as deeply mired in old habits as you are. It follows, then that if you think someone acted deliberately, maybe you don't understand the situation.
Change is hard, but new doors usually won't open until you have closed the old ones behind you. There's no free lunch. You can rarely kill two birds with one stone by flinging a single stone at two birds. There isn't a right or a wrong way. There's only the way you choose and the consequences there of. It's a very imperfect world. Try to make it better. Gotta go."
I love you Da. |

That's very Buddhist in many ways. It also demonstrates what a good heart your dad had. Great sign. | |
