Thumpie update [May. 7th, 2008|09:37 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | alive]

I went back to the hospital for a check up on my heart after two weeks on the blood pressure meds. My pressure is still boarder line hypertensive. They want to add a beta blocker on top of my ace inhibitor. This is the blood pressure stuff that is suppose to help my heart heal up after the last event. The beta blocker is suppose to lower my heart rate a little as well. I'll have to where my heart monitor in a couple of days and see what happens.

I have another echo cardiogram scheduled in a couple of months and hopefully I won't have to take the blood pressure any more. It sound like I'm stuck with the Zocor, that's the one for cholesterol.

It sounds like I've been afflicted with the family curse. Both my parents had hypertension. I think a couple of my siblings are dealing with blood pressure issues too.

I don't think this will affect my ability to take the walk. We'll see.

I'm walking 60 miles in the Twin Cities Breast Cancer 3-Day! Will you help me reach my goal?

I had a very brief arrythmia attack today. It lasted less then a minute but it was long enough to require action on my part to stop it. My cardiologist suggested bearing down on my heart like I was trying to crap but that didn't work so I went back to lying down and consciously relaxing. It took about fifteen seconds.

I'll give Dr. B a call but I don't think it's something to seriously worry about.

[mood | healthy]

I'm mailing in my heart monitor tomorrow and we'll see what happens. Nothing has happened the month while I was wearing it. I called in a recording once just to give them an idea what my heart does normally. I think at this point we are going to keep an eye on it. I will continue to be caffeine and sugar free which seems to be less of a problem as time goes on. I'm still on my diet and yes I have lost weight thanks for noticing.

Maybe I should get a hair cut since I will be hanging around.

Well I met my Cardio man. He was as laid back about the whole thing as I was. I've been dealing with it since I was a kid and I've gone on just fine. It's something we want to keep an eye on of course. I went home with a heart monitor that I will be wearing for a month and then well see what happens. It hooks up to my chest in the usual way and hangs around my neck on a string. It's about the size of a beeper.

My problem was explained to me again. It's not indicative of anything more serious. At my age it's more of a worry that I will pass out and fall down. When I get older I may need meds or the procedure. Right now it's wait and see.

I was a little annoyed to notice that their scale says that I'm 180. The nurse said there might be a five pound difference between theirs and mine.

I'm taking my brother up on his invitation to the Thia Chi class he's taking. Even without the heart problem it sounds like it would be helpful. He said his heart rate and blood pressure dropped the moment he started taking it. Blood pressure is family problem too.

I took a couple of yoga classes years ago because I liked the idea of taking yoga and you could meet flexible women. It was a little pricey and I didn't really practice. The TC class is something I'm taking for my own benefit. Maybe I can meet calm women.

Don't get me wrong I'm still going to see the cardiologist.

[mood | Pretty damn testy]

I went to have dinner with mom at "The Home". I told her about my trip to the ER and she said she wants to come with me to my appointment with the cardiologist. Mom says shes still responsible for me and she wants to make sure I'm fine. I tried to remind her I'm an adult, it's my friggen heart, and we are only going to talk about what needs to be done. We ran around about it for a while.

At the kind of place mom lives health is the topic of conversation quite a bit.

How's your leg problem? Didja hear about Agnes fainting? My hand is still a little stiff but much better.

So I'm sitting there talking about my trickey ticker like one of the tenants.

Sorry, I can't have coffee. No thank, sugar aggrivates my condition.

I'm thirty nine years old god Damn it! I'm not old.

Singing Minnie the Moocher and talking about Tokyo Rose is one thing but walking around with the ER bracelet is a whole other deal.

[mood | annoyed]

I had another arithmia attack. This time at work, before lunch, in front of everybody. I went to the sick room to try to calm it down but it didn't happen. I went to the medical emergency coordinator and he called an ambulance. Three EMTs showed up along with two cops. It was all very subtle. My heart rate made it up to 250. If I bowled that I would get a patch. They wheeled me out on a strecher that was jack up high to get around the cube and everyone could see me. What else could I do but the Her Majesty the Queen wave. They managed to slow it down in the ambulance and I went to Abbott Northwestern this time. I have a cardiologist appointment in twenty days. They had the courtesy to shave parts of my chest for the EKG. They even gave me a couple of tips on how to knock it out should it happen again. I was going about it all wrong I basically need to bear down like I was going to the bathroom and should correct my heart rate, they also suggested massaging the carotid artery and putting my head in a sink of cold water. (I don't know why) I'm game for anything at this point.

Walking in to work tomorrow is going to be fun.

I have an cardiologist appointment October 24th at 2:30 and I should be early. Shaving my chest would not be a bad idea. Call it a Kirk moment.

I don't know yet what will need to be done with my embarrassing cardiovascular problem. I will get a daily dose or there is a procedure where they send a tiny welder into my system through a vein in my leg and cauterize some of the nerve endings. Basically cut back the weeds.

What bothers me is having to cut down on the caffeine. It's free at work and I have to admit I tend to over indulge. I need my daily cuppa. Now I paint [info]omnifarious's tea rack with a certain resentment. There are coffee references too.

It is by my will alone that I set my mind in motion.
It is by the cup of java that thoughts acquire speed.
The hands acquire shakes. The shakes become a warning.
It is by my will alone that I set my mind in motion.

Of course I have to include this clip )

Oh yeah and if you're expecting to get an EKG shave your chest. Trust me you'll feel better afterwards.

Oil Can Oil Can [Sep. 16th, 2006|11:54 am]

[mood | tired]

Well After Book Movie night was winding down my heart decided to do the happy dance. Basically it started to beat really fast for no reason. This happens once every year or so and it's freak but it usually never last that long. Well this morning it lasted an hour so I called 911. They got my heart rate down and took me in for observations. It was like when mom went in. They would hooked me up and then I would wait for two hours. The got a gave me a sonogram of my ticker I can share with my sister in law who has pictures of her developing kid. The name of my condition is Superventricular tachycardia. The wiring in the old pump is a little too close together. It can be controlled by meds or a procedure.

The funny part is this is the start of health week at work. I had to call my brother at four thirty in the morning and tell him I'm at the hospital and I needed a lift home and a pair of pants. I left home in boxer shorts and a t-shirt.

Anyway I'm fine. It was one of those moments where your mortality is rubbed in your face.

Friend Good Heart Bad [Oct. 4th, 2003|09:57 am]

[mood |Still sleepy but amused]
[music |Talking Heads]

I spent a lot of time friday with Mom. She was checked out wednesday to see if she could handle a knee operation and during the EEG they found out her heart was acting funny. They too a sonogram and found some scar tissue. At some point in the past my mom and a frinkin Heart AttacK and she didn't even know it. When I called her to see how the the test went she told me she had a heart attack like it just happened. I e-mailed my siblings and ask what the hell is going on and why no one said anything. It turns out it wasn't a bad one. Is there such a thing? Well she's fine and asked to be more informed whether I understood what was going on or not.

I hung out with mom friday we went to St Patrick's Guild and she got a bible cover and I checked out the new saints. We had a nice lunch at Embers and I inflicted Waking Life on her. I thought she would watch what she wanted and not have to worry about losing the plot line.

I had dinner at the Pines with her. An older gentlemen I sat next too ask the young waitress if they were rationing the vegetables. She didn't seem to understand what he was talking about. I mentioned she was a young girl and probably does remember rationing during the war. I still have some of my grandmothers tickets in a book somewhere. It got a laugh.

I made it to [info]jmana's birthday party. I heard more about MSFITS and I have to say I'm more interested but I think I will stick with minioning at this point. I'm sure someone will read that and take advantage. We hung out at jmana's for a while and then went to the No Pants show at the Bryant Lake Bowl. I have to go to more theater in uptown. One of the guys in the show work at NTC where I used to volunteer a bit. Considering it's an improv show they asked for subject matter. I shouted out "Samuel Beckett". They asked. I was amused that one guy actually used Beckett oriented subject matter. The other guy started talking about time travel as in Quantum Leap. Needless to say I was the only one laughing my ass off. That happens more and more. Some jokes I make just for me.

I'm going to a MSFITS open board meeting later today then head to a movie with these people. It feels like I'm getting a life.

Oh I included [info]7thstranger as a friend. She added me. I hope she knows what she's getting herself into.

What an echo! [Jun. 1st, 2003|05:34 pm]

[mood |broken hearted]
[music |Talking Heads-Names]

I had an unpleasant surprise today. In the middle of my shift I had heart palpatations. I hate using that term it sounds like something out of Gone With The Wind. Anyway my ticker would go into double time with out asking. If I lie down and relax it goes away. It does freak a person out though and it tends to draw some attention. This happened once three years ago. When I was a kid we had it checked out and it doesn't happen often enough or for long enough to really merit action. Just one more thing to put on the list when I get medical insurance.
